Vans OTW simply stands for Vans “Off The Wall”. Like Vans California, Vans OTW is part of the Vans shoes company. The collection was started in 2010 and today it offers a number of different styles and hence caters to a widely varied audience. Although this range has only been in existence for a relatively short period of time, it has rapidly gained popularity. The original Vans shoe company was formed by two brothers with the surname Van Doren, and three more business partners.
The company was founded in March 1966 in the Californian town of Anaheim. It started out as a business where customers would come in and order a pair of Vans shoes and they would be made the same day. The customer could then come in and pick them up. If they’d ordered them in the morning, then they could pick them up the same afternoon. By the early 1970’s Vans shoes was becoming increasingly popular, and also had a couple of large contracts for producing trainers for sectors of the US military.
However, it was the skaters in Southern California that have helped transform the brand into what it is today – a brand heavily associated with the world of skateboarding. The well-made shoes with soles that grip well became very popular in Californian skate parks. By the late 1970’s, Vans were producing shoes that had been specifically designed with skaters in mind. In the early 1980’s the company experienced severe financial problems because they were making shoes for too many different markets.
In 1988 the company was sold and has since gone from strength-to-strength. The Van Doren brothers still have an active role in the company today. Vans shoes have gone on to become one of the biggest and well-known urban shoe manufacturers of recent times. They still have a very strong following within the skateboarding community, and have opened skate parks in various countries in Northern America.
