Carhartt was founded in 1889 by Hamilton Carhartt and is still a family business to this day. Its head office is in Dearborn, Michigan.
Its origins began when Hamilton started to make clothing for the railway workers in Detroit where the railway workers needed clothing that was durable and long lasting. He was a pioneer of the use of denim and brown duck later to be known as canvas which has been used as a core material throughout the ranges ever since.
This has continued with the evolution of the brand where it now uses heavy duty materials aswell as strong reinforcements including the use of rivets, reinforced closures aswell as the use of fabrics which are flame retardant and waterproof.
Carhartt is well known in the manufacturing and manual labour industries as a producer of well made, hard wearing durable clothing.
The slogan 'Best in Class' depicts the companies motto which it has continuously tried to emulate since the company was founded.
In the 1994 Work in Progress started to import Carhartt's products into Europe and so Carhartt WIP was born. This brand has continued to evolve with the first product range designed exclusively for Europe was born in 1997.
Carhartt's European roots are planted firmly in street wear where the brand is well known for its quality, durability and comfort again emulating the founding key principles established by its founder Hamilton over a century before.
The brand continues to gain in popularity all over Europe and is expanding by opening its own exclusive shops selling Carhartt products. It also has opened stores selling its Work In Progress range in the US which have been widely received.
