Nike is the biggest sportswear company in the world. They have the most recognized branded logo with the Nike swoosh. Every kid has a pair of Nike shoes and with sub brands like Jordan, they are the most sought after shoes on the market. Surely to have achieved so much the company must have been around for years? Nope, Nike footwear only started in 1964 and was originally called ‘Blue Ribbon Sports’. Philip Knight and Bill Bowerman set up the company and the official name change did not happen until 1978.
When 1980 arrived Nike had managed to get itself a 50% share of the athletic shoe market with very little advertising. The most recognized piece of Nike Advertising is the ‘Just Do It’ slogan and this is now regarded as being one of the top 5 advertising slogans ever. It is still used to this day on t-shirts and clothing.
The Nike HQ is in Beaverton, Oregon. This will answer a few questions as to why the word ‘Oregon’ appears on pieces of Nike clothing. The Jordan brand was one of the biggest things to come out of the 80’s. Michael Jordan was, and still is, the most famous basketball player of all time. Nike persuaded him to bring out a range of footwear sporting the Nike branding. Later on it became just the Jordan brand but to this day Nike still re-issues the boots and every re-issue is met with a sell out, queues out the door and even more hype for the brand.
Their dominance in the marketplaces is complete. If you skateboard then the Nike SB ‘skate boarding’ shoe is the Holy Grail. They have done colabs with some of the best in the game such as Huf, Undefeated, NERD and the infamous Diamond Supply Co Tiffany shoe. All of these collaborations have ensured that the legacy of Nike is felt long after the shoes have been made.
Love extreme sports? Yes they have a shoe for that too. It’s the Nike 6.0, made with the enthusiast in mind meaning heavier duty materials, more rugged construction and the ability to live up to the rigors that extreme sports can throw you. With this rugged construction comes a whole new audience who want a good looking shoe that can stand up to the stresses of every day wear. Now that’s why Nike is the biggest footwear brand in the world.
