Bearbricks or Be@rbricks were created by the Japanese toy company Medicom. This type of toy has become very popular over the past decade. Bearbrick toys got their name when Medicom combined the words 'Bear' and 'Kubrick'. A Kubrick toy has a shape that resembles a human body. A Bearbrick toy has a body that resembles the shape of a human body, but a head that resembles that of a bear.
Bearbrick toys first came to the market in 2001, and were an instant hit. Today Medicom produces many different types of this toy, ranging from comic book heroes such as Batman to more generic designs. A great deal of thought and effort goes into creating these toys, and Medicom toy company have even collaborated with designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Levis, Gucci, Channel, Nike, Adidas, to name a few. Other previously unknown artists and illustrators have risen to fame through their input on designing Bearbricks.
It’s probably pretty obvious that many of these toys have been designed for an adult rather than for a child. Not only can you choose from dozens of different styles, you can also get these toys in different sizes, ranging from 7cm to a whopping 70cm. The three most common sizes are 100% which is 7cm high, 400% which is 28cm high and 1000% which is 70cm high. These quirky toys are very unique and interesting, and Bearbricks have built up a large cult following over the past ten years or so.
Medicom Toy Company is a Japanese toy manufacturer that created the Kubrick toys and Bearbrick toys. It was founded in 1996. The company has six different areas that it concentrates on, but one of its most popular is the Bearbrick toy range. However, its Real Action Hero (RAH) line of products remains very popular, as does the Kubrick range. Most of the toys are limited edition and some have gone on to become collector’s items and fetch large amounts at auction.
